Summer 2010
Jul 13 – Nijmegen workups – Laurie joined Hon. Peter Mackay and two teams from the National Capital Region for a training march in preparation for the Vierdaagse or Nijmegen March. The Vierdaagse takes place in the Netherlands and involves four x 45 km marches in combat dress. This will be the second time that Laurie has participated.

Jul 5 - Cakes for Seniors - More cakes for seniors and more chats with some great folks. Today saw Laurie visiting Meadowlark and Laurier House before heading to the airport to fly to Ottawa.

Jul 4 - All Nations Day - Laurie joined the congregation of All Nations Full Gospel Church for their celebration of All Nations Day. 26 countries from Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean are represented in the congregation, that has been active in Edmonton since 2000. It was a very colourful service with lots of great music and was followed by an excellent lunch.

Jul 3 - Door knocking - Laurie and his team kicked off the summer door knocking schedule with four hours in the Laurier area. Quite a few folks were at home on abeautiful Saturday afternoon and this is one of Laurie's favourite ways to interact with constituents.
Jul 2 - Cake Day - Laurie and volunteers took (post) Canada Day cakes to Canterbury, Westlawn, McQueen and Britannia House and spent hours in conversation with the residents. A game of Canadian Trivial Pursuit added an element of skill and knowledge at McQueen.

July 1st CANADA DAY - Laurie spent a very full day in the riding attending many events. the day starterd with serving pancake breakfast to thousands of Edmontonians at the Alberta Legislature with the Ismaili Muslim community. Laurie then helpede swear in 80 new Canadians from 66 countries and he welcomed them to Canada in 28 different languages. There were events at City Hall, in the Boyle Street area, Chinatown and at seniors homes. The day ended with a large event at the Edmonton Garrison to show support for military families. The event was sponsored byu the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and raised thousands of dollars for the Edmonton Military Family Resource Centre. Jefferson Starship was the headline performer at the bandstand. Nobody does it like Edmonton!

Jun 30 - Laurie held meetings in the office, delivered Canada Day cakes and chatted with residents at Groat House and Churchill Retirement Residence, and brought greetings to students and staff at Norquest College's annual Canada Day celebration.

Jun 29 - CKUA Arts and Design Festival - Laurie brought greetings to staff, board and supporters of CKUA Radio. CKUA has been an ambassador for Alberta culture and Alberta artists for 83 years and is unique amongst Canadian broadcasters for its support from the community its importance to the local and provincial communities.
Jun 28 - Laurie visited with seniors at St. Andrews Centre and Teglar Terrace. He, Judy and Robb also attended Edmonton's Tribute to National Heroes (hockey and military), sponsored by Hockey Canada and broadcast live on TSN. Members of Canada's two gold medal hockey teams and the women's under-18 gold medal winners joined other Olympians to be saluted by an enthusiastic crowd at Commonwealth Stadium. A couple of flypasts by a CF-18 brought the event to a thundering crescendo.

Jun 27 - Airfest - Laurie and Robb enjoyed walking about aircraft and other displays at the annual AirFest at the Alberta Aviation Museum and Blatchford Field. Another gorgeous day in Alberta.
Jun 26 - Lord Starthcona's Horse - Laurie attended the parade to mark the change of appointment for the Colonel of the Regiment from Colonel (ret) John Roderick to Major-General (ret) Cam Ross. The Strathconas are the "fighter pilots" of the Army and always put on great parades with rollpasts of their armour and Leopard tanks firing a roaring feu de joie. Spectacular!
